Background:
Approximately 1 in 7 couples of reproductive age are classed as infertile equating to ~80
million people globally. The single most common cause of infertility is sperm dysfunction,
affecting 1:15 men in Europe. The primary treatment is Assisted Conception with intra
cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), whereby a single spermatozoon is injected directly into
the egg (Nyboe-Andersen et al., 2008, Hum Reprod Update 14, 593-604).
The laboratories of Dr. C. Barratt (Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland) and Dr. Edgar da
Cruz e Silva (Centro de Biologia Celular, Univ. de Aveiro, Portugal) are mainly interested
in understanding the signalling molecular mechanisms that underline human sperm
motility, one of the most important causes of male infertility.
Master and PhD student joint positions are available to work in close collaboration at
Ninewells Hospital at the University of Dundee (Scotland) and the Centre for Cell Biology
of the University of Aveiro (Portugal).
Selection of Candidates for a FCT PhD Grant Proposal
We accept applications for a PhD proposal to be submitted to the FCT grant call in the
following theme: signalling mechanisms underlying human sperm motility.
Proposal should include:
- detailed Curriculum vitae of the candidate;
- letter of motivation.
Send applications (quote reference CBC-NH) by e-mail as soon as possible to:
cbc@bio.ua.pt
The research program will be developed at Ninewells Hospital (Dundee, Scotland) & the
Centre for Cell Biology (Univ. de Aveiro, Portugal) under the supervision of Edgar da Cruz
e Silva and C Barratt.
Candidates should have preferentially a MSc and BSc in Biochemistry, Biology, or related
areas (final mark of 15/20 or higher).
